Welsh Terriers

from: The Complete Dog

Welsh terriers were originally bred as hunting dogs. However, this native breed of Wales quickly rose to become show dogs. Breeders attempted to outdo each other by developing the Welsh terrier dogs' wiry coats and coloration. People often get a Welsh Terrier dog as a pet because its one of the most mild-mannered of terriers.

You might think this characteristic would make it one of the more boring terriers. In fact, even the most die-hard terrier fan can have fun with this breed because Welsh terrier dogs love to play. This makes this breed a great companion.

Although not as high-energy as other breeds, he's still a terrier, which means he does have some high levels of energy. Therefore, they should get proper exercise regularly and should be properly socialized at an early age as well. This will help him to become friendlier towards humans and develop a good tolerance of other animals. Welsh Terriers are generally friendly around children, provided the children don't provoke or pester him too much.

The Welsh Terrier can be trained using different methods. What you need to keep in mind when training a Welsh Terrier is that you can be firm but gentle. These dogs can be taught to perform a variety of tricks and actually do very well in fly ball tricks or tricks that involve catching flying stuff such as a Frisbee.

You should brush a Welsh Terrier's hair at least once a week in order to remove dead or loose hair. This helps prevent unnecessary shedding inside the house. Although regular bathing isn't really required, it's advisable to wipe off dust and dirt from your dog regularly using a damp washcloth.

Due to its high energy level, it's advisable that a Welsh Terrier be kept in a fenced in yard which gives him enough space to play catch. However, if you take him out regularly fir exercise, a Welsh Terrier can do without the yard.

One thing that always gets people's attention is Welsh Terrier's excellent ability to jump, which provides people a lot of amusement. The main reason he can jump and hop like he does is his long legs, which enables a Welsh Terrier to perform various tricks other dog breeds are unable to do.

Why do you need to know this about Welsh Terriers? First, understanding this will help you discover the best way to take care your Welsh Terrier and thus you can decide whether a this breed will make the best pet for you.
