Tricks to Teach Your Pit Bull

from: The Complete Dog

Once you're taught your Pit Bull the basic commands, he's now ready to learn some fun tricks that are a bit flashier. Yes, it's the traditional 'roll over', 'shake hands', 'play dead', 'play catch', and "speak' tricks you can use to impress your friends and family on how smart your pooch really is. These easy tricks to teach your dog, along using some of the same concepts you used when teaching the basic commands.

Of course, some of the keys to success include being patient, creative, and most of all, make sure both you and your dog have some fun.

Roll Over: Teaching your dog to roll over is simply a matter of telling him to lie down, and then repeating "roll over" while enticing him on his side using a treat. As soon as he is familiar with rolling onto his side, you can use the treat to lead him onto his back. Lead him the rest of the way, and then eventually only give him the treat when he's rolled all the way over.

Shake Hands: This trick start by commanding your dog to "sit." Next, say "shake" while holding a treat in your closed hand in front of him. Most dogs get the message and pick up a foot and paw at your hand to try and get the treat. However, if he doesn't, give him a little nudge on the leg. You can try to lure his head to one side, which usually gets him to lift his leg up on the opposite side. Give him his reward as soon as his paw leaves the ground. As he becomes familiar with this trick, get him to lift up his leg higher and longer.

Play Dead: You teach your Pit Bull to play dead by having him lie down from a standing position. Start by guiding him with a treat and then have him drop quickly in order to get the treat. Once he's in the down position, lure him over onto his side, and make him stay down for longer periods before getting the treat. To get his head down, you can try placing the treat on the floor and not giving it to him until he places his head low. You may have to guide him with your hand at first to give him a some help.

Catch: Your dog can learn how to play catch by you tossing a ball or treat in a high arc over his face, getting it to land just behind his nose. If your dog won't try to catch it in the air, pick it up before he grabs it off the ground. He'll eventually understand that in order for him to beat you to the treat, he'll need to grab it before it hits the ground. One warning though, is to never attempt try and teach this trick with a dog who tends to be very possessive of his food.

Speak: This trick is taught by saying "speak" when it appears as if he's about to bark, and then followed by a trick. Don't reward the barking unless you've first said "speak."
