Visiting a Pit Bull Kennel

from: The Complete Dog

Those professional dog breeders as well as hobby breeders who put ads in all-breed dog magazines and especially Pit Bull-only magazines tend to be serious about their dogs. In addition, with the increasing popularity of Internet advertising, many breeders are now getting on board with the information age and putting up their own websites.

Whether you're seaching for the perfect puppy through online advertising or breed-specific magazines, you'll discover a large variety of quality Pit Bulls from reputable and honest breeders.

So what determines whether a breeder is honest and reputable? The reality is, even though a breeder may appear to be knowlegeable and professional, there really isn't a guarantee. Some breeders are only concerned with their profits which means they couldn't care less about properly caring for their dogs. You'll need to use your instincts and best judgment to firgure out if the breeder you choose is one you can trust.

The best thing to do, if you possibe, is to visit their facilities to have a look around and observe how it's operated. Take special note of the way the breeder treats his dogs plus the overall atmosphere of the place. Avoid Pit Bull breeders who treat their dogs like they're livestock or as fighting animals. In addition, if a breeder doesn't allow potential customers to visit, you're likley better off going elsewhere.

You should be observing whether a breeder is breeding his Pit Bulls as fighting dogs. A good clue is they may have their dogs tethered with heavy chains. Another clue is observing spring poles, treadmills or any equipment that may be used to build strength and muscles. However, note that this equipment, may also be found at Pit Bull breeders who aren't raising fighting dogs since many show breeders use treadmills to keep thier dogs in good condition. As well, breeders and pet owners have spring poles for their dog's to have fun as well as for exercise.

When at the kennel, watch out for Pit Bulls that have scars, especially large ones. These scars could be a good indication these dogs were used for fighting, although they might simply indicate they had an accident. However, if a lot of dogs in the kennel have scars, especially in the area of their face, it's a strong indication they have a fighting history, or may mean you're dealing with a very careless breeder.

It's always a good idea to do your research ahead of time and know exactly what you want. If you're looking for a Pit Bull simply as a companion and a playmate for your children or perhaps one you can train as a show dog, you'll be looking for a specific kind of puppy. So be honest with your breeder regarding your intentions and they'll help you get the ideal Pit Bull that's going to make you and your family happy.
