How to Choose the Right Pit Bull Puppy
from: The Complete DogNow that you've done some research and learned all about the Pit Bulls history including all the unfair controversies, you've still decided to bring a Pit Bull puppy into your family. You've searched everywhere and finally discover several good breeders with a great selection of litters to choose from. Now comes the hard part -- which puppy to pick.
You'll find that bot male and female Pit Bulls make equally find pets. Males are a bit larger and some will mark their territory in your house by urinating on the walls and furniture -- which is a behavior that might be difficult to stop. Also, since they have genetic inclinations to attack, a male might have a tendency to fight with other male dogs, especially another male Pit Bull.
Female Pit Bulls also tend to fight with each other, but are less likely to do so. In addition, females experience "estrus" or heat cycles twice a year. Estrus can last for about three weeks, however, neutering will usually help to eliminate it.
When the time comes to decide which Pit Bull puppy to choose from the litter, pick a puppy who has the best parents and grandparents. Remember, Pit Bull puppies are really cute, but their faces will change as they grow into adults. If appearance is important to you, make sure the breeder has the look you like. The best way to determine how a puppy will look as adults is to see how their parents and grandparents look.
You should consider basic features of a Pit Bull, since they are very strong and athletic dogs. The puppy you choose should show strength, vigor, energy and speed. If you can watching the way the parents act, you'll have a good idea of how the puppy's temperament will develop. If its parents show signs of curiosity, positive energy and enthusiasm, it's likely their puppies will develop these traits as well. Of course, if its parents and/or grandparents have lived long, healthy lives, it's a good indication their puppies will enjoy a long lifespan.
Observe the way each puppy in the litter behaves with the rest of the litter. A Pit Bull puppy that appears to be bossy will tend to become a dominant adult. A puppy that is submissive could grow up up to be an insecure adults, thus it's best to try to pick a puppy with a temperament somewhere in between these two extremes. An excited puppy who curiously runs to greet you and then follows you around could very well be your best choice. In addition, if the puppy doesn't resist being held by you and remains relaxed when you lift him up is also a good sign.
Pit Bull puppies all look cute and adorable so you should spend some time with as many puppies as you can so to help you see the differences in their personalities. This will ensure that you're able to choose the best one for you and your family.
