Pit Bull Breeder Warning Signs
from: The Complete DogOnce you've determined that you're going to get a Pit Bull, because you like their appearance and personality, it's important that you make sure you get a purebred Pit Bull, one who looks and acts like a Pit Bull. It's also imperative that you ensure the dog you're choosing can live a healthy existence. It's always best to be cautious since there are a lot of poor quality Pit Bull breeders who are more concerned with profit than properly breeding their dogs. Now that you've decided on a very special breed that tends to have many inappropriate breeders, you must take your time, seek out information about the breeder's reputation and carefully choose the Pit Bull you plan to spend a lifetime with.
Therefore finding a good Pit Bull requires finding a good breeder. What's difficult about finding a good breeder is that anyone who's ever let two dogs of the same breed mate often consider themselves an expert at dog breeding. The unfortunate truth is that Pit Bulls are too often bred by people who are just out to make money, with little concern for their breeding practices.
Here are some features you should be aware of when searching for a Pit Bull breeder.
1. Stay away from breeders who are cruel and disrespectful with their dogs and even dislike them.
2. Also avoid breeders who breed Pit Bulls to be aggressive fighters rather than companion dogs for families.
3. There are breeders who will send their puppies off to new buyers at any age, rather than before their puppies turn eight weeks old. This is a sign of a poor breeder.
4. If you come across a breeder selling cheap puppies be wary. A good breeder will spend a lot to raise healthy puppies, so a breeder selling puppies cheap usually haven't taken the necessary steps and time to breed and raise a healthy litter. Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $300 - $400 for a registered Pit Bull and $400 - $600 for a show quality puppy. If you pay substantially less for your puppy, there's a high probability of problems arising. Also note that male and female puppies should cost the same.
5. If the breeders has no photos, videotapes or pedigree of both parents and other relatives, be concerned. Honest breeders will have compiled information about the puppy's family background.
6. A good sign that a breeders isn't that concerned about how he breeds and raises his dogs will likely be unfamiliar with common health problems and concerns associated with the breed. On the other hand, good Pit Bull breeders will take measure to ensure the puppy is healthy, such as having their hips evaluated and screened for hip dysplasia.
7. Some breeders will tell you that Pit Bulls are ideal dogs for anyone. This isn't true because Pit Bulls are special dogs that do require special owners who know understand what this breed is all about.
