Your Pit Bull Needs a Good Reputation

from: The Complete Dog

Pit Bulls are a breed that tends to attract a lot attention wherever they go, and too often the responses they get are negative. Pit Bulls are often discriminated against due to so many misconception regarding their strength and origins. As a Pit Bull owner, it's in your best interest to ensure your dog becomes a good an example of why this breed can be a wonderful pet and companion. Here are a few tips to help you get a the best possible image for your Pit Bull.

1. You must teach your dog to have good manners for his sake as well as his breed's reputation. To help with recognizing his outstanding nature, the AKC provides the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certificate. By obtaining this certificate it will help you convince friends, neighbors and your landlord or an insurance agent that your Pit Bull is a well behaved, well trained and a model canine citizen. Your dog doesn't have to be a purebred or an AKC-registered dog in order to enroll. Their test evaluate a number of behaviors, including the dog's ability to accept strangers, to stay calm and remain friendly, to sit politely when required, or to walk politely on a loose leash.

2. Make sure your dog passes an official temperament test. This ten part series of testing is available through the American Temperament Test Association. These tests evaluate every aspects of a dog's temperament, including how friendly his, his shyness, aggressiveness and stability. Any dog that passes these tests will be awarded the Temperament Tested (TT) title after its name. Since the association maintains a record of how many dogs from every breed passes or fails, you'll discover that, based on their record, Pit Bulls consistently score among the best of breeds, which is a helpful fact that will effect a breed's reputation.

3. Your dog is very strong, as well as intelligent, courageous, tough, enthusiastic, agile and obedient. These are the qualifications the American Rescue Dog Association is always on the look out for to become a Search and Rescue (SAR) dogs. Perhaps your dog is one that could take up this challenge.

4. People are often surprised to learn there are numberous Pit Bulls who act as therapy dogs. These are dogs who bring entertainment, affection, companionship, plus their complete unconditional love to those in nursing homes, mental health institutes, prisons and hospitals. Therapy dogs must be stable, friendly and extremely well-trained. In order to obtain a certificate as a Therapy Dog, tour dog will be required to complete a short program.

5. Do everything you can to provide a good example other Pit Bull owners can follow. Never let your Pit Bull loose to just wander all over your neighborhood. Always obey leash laws in public and make sure he sits by your side or heels properly if you're in a crowded place. It's also imperative that you don't let him jump up on or scare people, get in the habit of chasing cats or fighting with other dogs, barking hysterically, or showing any aggreassive behavior.
