Pit Bull Training Tips
from: The Complete DogOnce advantage to owning a Pit Bull is that they're easier to train than many other dog breeds. The main reasons is that Pit Bulls are very smart, among the spartest of any breed, and they eager and willing participants in any dog training program. In adddition, Pitt Bulls enjoy pleasing their owners and since current dog training techniques are getting easier to implement and more effective as well, your Pit Bull can easily become the most friendly and intelligent dog in the neighborhood.
Here's a few tips to help yo with training your Pit Bull:
1. Keep in mind that dogs live their lives in the present moment. This means that when you reward or punish him, he just assumes it's for his behavior at the time he received the reward or punishment. A good example if when you discover a mess he left behind several hours ago. At this time, it's pointless to drag him over to it if he happens to be napping and scold him for leaving the mess. In his mind, he's being reprimanded for having a nap.
2. It's very important that you're consistent with your rules. If he wasn't allowed to sleep with you in your bed last night, then he shouldn't be allowed to sleep with at any time, despite his begging. If you give in to this, he'll get the message that that begging can sometimes pay off. So be careful, because you'll create a behavior pattern you'll find very difficult to change in the future once its ingrained.
3. A Pit Bull repeats actions he knows will result in getting him a reward, regardless of whether this reward is intentional or not. If you let him out of his cage to get him to stop whining, you many have temporarily found a solution. Unfortunately you might end up with a Pit Bull who whines constantly when he's placed in his cage. Therefore, only give him a reward for behaviors you want to see him repeat.
4.Since your Pit Bull will always be eager to please, you only have to show him the way. Trying to force him to do your bidding will only distract and possibly intimidate him, which will most likely result in slowing down his ability to learn.
5. It's never necessary to constantly repeat a command or yell louder and louder. This won't help in any way to make your dog comprehend what you're trying to get him to do. He's not deaf, and if he behaves as if he is, your job is to simply steer him in the right direction, which may mean taking a step back in his training process.
6. The most important tip is to be patient with your dog. Sometimes training won't go as smoothly and easily as you'd hoped it would, but it's certainly possible to train your dog. Just be realistic, firm but gentle, consistent in what you expect him to do, and maintain a good sense of humor with your Pit Bull because he's going to come around if given enough time.
