Dealing With Your Dog's Whining & Barking
from: The Complete DogYou have three choices when dealing with a noisy dog -- starting with doing nothing. If this is how you deal with the situation, your dog is going to keep on barking whenever he feels like it and you'll probably make a few enemies of your neighbors, or you could get evicted from your apartment or even a victim of chronic headaches.
Your second choice, is to correct your dog when he starts one of this noisy marathons. You could pretend to leave and then sneak back into the house and when his concert begins, you can break in on him, yelling "No, No, No, No", while shaking him by the collar.
Finally, your third choice is to teach your dog to do what he's doing on command, which allows you to gain control of the activity because when you issue a command, your dog focuses on you, and you'll be able to stop what you've started. In other words, a dog who speaks on command, shuts up on command as well. The command "Speak" turns him on while "Enough" turns him off.
Once your dog looks at you and whines, you can add the word "Speak." Now your dog will "Speak" on command, with and without you. You can intrude on this, whether you've got him started or not, by using that magic word "Enough." If your dog continues to sing, grasp his collar, command "Enough" once again, then gently shake him, adding harsh eye contact to your correction.
It's actually possible that you may have unintentionally trained your dog to whine, cry and bark by reinforcing his annoying behavior. You can determin this by making a checklist of what makes your dog whine and bark and how you respond when he does:
1. Your dog barks ... and you give him a treat to quiet him.
2. Your dog barks when you're on the phone, so you lean over and pet to keep him quiet.
3. Your dog whines while you're in bed reading a book, so you let him up onto the bed to quiet him down.
Follow the method outlined here, teaching your dog to bark on command and then stopping him with "Enough," harsh eye contact and a shake. Never give your dog any leeway when he's barking, whining or crying. Use the long down once a day, tighten up your training and make sure your dog remains quiet before you feed him, walk him and pet him. If your dog starts bothering you while you're watching TV, reading, or dining, squirt him in the mouth with water or lemon juice and go on about your business.
Makeing a lot of noise may seem like a lesser probelm than biting or being destructive, but it in the long run it will likely have serious consequences. It's in both you and your dog's best interest to put a stop to it and get this under control as quickly as possible.
