Knowing Your Dalmatian Dogs

from: The Complete Dog

Dalmatians, one of the oldest purebreds, became prominent worldwide due to the 1956 101 Dalmatians novel by Dodie Smith. The subsequent animation by Walt Disney and the 1996 live action movie of the same title that featured real Dalmatian dogs, all catapulted Dalmatians into being one of the most recognized breed around the world. However this hasn't spare Dalmatians from irresponsible or less informed owners, giving the dogs sobriquets that are basically undeserved.

Dalmatians are one of a kind, since they require a different listing of responsibilities than just any other dog. They're traveler dogs, for instance, and given free rein, they'd roam the countryside for weeks until totally lost. So if you're considering adopting a Dalmatian, understand these Dalmatian dog facts beforehand.

* Dalmatians are purebred dogs, which means they don't have relations to any other breed of dogs and shouldn't -- as a responsible owner. This is why it's important to get Dalmatians by pairs, that allows them to mate without mating with other breeds and tainting its bloodlines. The owner may also splay or neuter their Dalmatian.

* A Dalmatian dog's beauty is famous throughout the ages. During the middle ages, Dalmatians were used to accompany carriages as a coach dog. One reason is they're attractive dogs and can easily create attention. As a result, they're considered a royal dog breed in parts of medieval Europe, especially in England.

* A Dalmatian's physique is well suited as a carriage dog. In fact, a common moniker for Dalmatians is Spotted Coach Dogs. Due to their deep, barrel chest, they have the stamina to keep pace with a team of horses and a carriage. Dalmatians are also used for other horse drawn areas, such as fire engines (as old fire engines are horse drawn) and they're also known as firehouse dogs, and rescue dogs trained to locate trapped individuals in burning structures and guide them out.

What every Dalmatian needs, along with a high protein intake, are many opportunities for exercise. Since they're an energetic breed, frequent runs should be taken, with plenty of room to run around. This means that if a substantial lawn isn't available, a walk to the park should be on a Dalmatian's regular itinerary.
