Chihuahua: Small Dog, Big Heart

from: The Complete Dog

How many celebrities have you seeen, like Paris Hilton, toting around those tiny dogs with those hug brown eyes. These cute little dogs are Chihuahuas and they're definitely one of the smallest dog breeds in the world. Chihuahuas first appeared in Mexico and are certainly able to deal with warm climates. Of course, it doesn't hurt to provide a nice doggy sweater to make him feel warm and cozy during the winter season.

The Chihuahua weighs in 1 - 6 pounds and stands a miniscule five inches high and come in a number of colors, although tan or black and tan dogs are the most common. They have prick ears, an alert expression and big, slightly poppy eyes and come in both short haired and long haired varieties.

The American Kennel Club places Chihuahuas in the Toy Group. These dogs are bred as companion dogs, a duty they certainly excel at which is why they hate to be alone but thrive when being able to get into the thick of things.

A you can imagine, Chihuahuas are perfect apartment dogs since they don't take up much room and don't need much exercise. Some people are even successful at training them to use a litter box. Of course, Chihuahuas will also enjoy living at a house with a nice yard as well since they enjoy exercising and playing outdoors during the warm season.

Chihuahuas have a tendency to be a bit nippy with small children, especially if it's accidentally injured and has reason to fear being handled by them. They can also be bossy and easily spoiled, especially if their owners allow it to get away with aggressive behaviors. Anyone who owns other dogs will need to be sure your Chihuahua doesn't bully them because they'll pick a fight with much larger dogs, since they truly believe they're as big and strong as a Rottweiler. In fact, surprisingly, Chihuahuas are terrific guard dogs and will even take on human intruders.

Unfortunately, this breed has a tendency to be self-centered and badly behaved, thus you should give your puppy some obedience training. Let's face it, even a tiny tyrant can be unpleasant to be around. Puppy training classes will help your dog learn basic obedience, but they will also help to socialize your puppy. He'll learn at an early age how to get along with people and other dogs. Despite their size, these dogs are amazingly intelligent and so they'll do well with obedience training. Some even go on to take agility classes.

Chihuahuas eat small eaters, but feeding costs can still relatively bit high, since these dogs are often picky eaters. Also, this breed is so delicate some of them have trouble eating hard, dry food. Chihuahuas are prone to dislocated jaws, fractures, epilepsy and rheumatism.

Short haired Chihuahuas require very little care but, of course, long haired Chihuahuas will need a bit more grooming. However, they still don't need to be brushed more than once a week. With their tiny jaws, it's not surprising that some of these dogs have dental problems, so you may also want to brush your dog's teeth regularly.

If you'd love to have a dog small enough to tuck into your pocket, but with the heart of a bigger dog, then look no further than a Chihuahua.
