English Bull Dogs

from: The Complete Dog

English bull dogs are believed to have developed from an ancient breed of Asiatic mastiff. First born in Great Britain, they were named "bull dog" simply due to their robust appearance that resembled a little bull. English bull dogs were originally developed for bull baiting in the medieval Britain, but now are know as one of the calmest canine breeds. At that time, they were sent into fields to attack bulls, before the sport was prohibited by law during the early nineteenth century.

An English bull dog has a unique and intimidating appearance, very short, but with a compact and wide body. Its head is thick, massive and broad with cheeks that expand to the sides of its eyes. Its lips are pendent and undershot, and its eyes are dark, round and are set far apart. Its face is what make an English bull dog so unique, with its small ears that are thin and folded back.

English bull dogs have a coat that lies close to its body and is noted for its texture and appearance, with smooth, flat and straight hairs. Their coat also comes in different colors and shades. You'll see shades of red, brindle, pale yellow, white, fawn, and washed out red, or a combination of these colors in an English bull dog. Black is not common and isn't even acceptable. These colors look great with the dogs' short and small size with squarely set and stocky legs.

English bull dogs' intimidating appearence doesn't reveal its actual character and temperament because they're often described as the calmest and most reliable breed. It's gentle and loving, with a tendency to seek more affection and attention. English bull dogs also interact quite well with other canine breeds and even felines and are good companions for both adults and children.

With all of these characteristics, it's not surprising the English bull dog is treated as a family dog. In addition, they've excellent guard dogs, which is why more bull dogs are now being trained for guarding and watch dogging. They are courageous and will withstand all challenges. However, English bull dogs will only do well in this field if trained properly.

Maintaining your English bull dog requires regular exercise and care sessions. Brushing or combing to remove any dirt and loose hair should be done regularly. Bathing should only be done when needed for the bull dog does shed regularly. Its mouth and other parts of its body should also be cleaned on a regular basis to keep the English bull dog in good health. However, all of these tasks should only be performed by a dominant owner. The same is true for the training.
